Here I note departures from the text of Griffith’s edition (Griffith 1983) and a few other textual issues.
i. 431 (409 in the Greek): “in the west.” Here I have accepted Wecklein’s suggested supplement (noted by Griffith) for an evident lacuna (a gap in the received text).
ii. 444–47 (425–30 in the Greek): these lines have a number of difficulties in meter, style, and meaning; see Griffith.
iii. 548 (541 in the Greek): there is a lacuna at the end of this line; in this case I haven’t included any of the supplements scholars have proposed.
iv. 549 (543 in the Greek): part of this line is metrically problematic (see Griffith) but I have translated the Greek (loosely) as it stands.
v. 645 (629 in the Greek): the idiom here is a debated one; my translation follows a different punctuation (and a different understanding of the line) from that in Griffith.
vi. 660 (642 in the Greek): here I follow editions that adopt the reading aischunomai (I am ashamed), found in some manuscripts, rather than oduromai (I weep), found in others and preferred by Griffith.
vii. 704–5 (691–92 in the Greek): meter and syntax are problematic; I follow Griffith’s understanding of the general sense rather than accepting any particular emendation.
viii. 900 (895 in the Greek): here I accept Hermann’s supplement (noted by Griffith) for the lacuna.
ix. 905, 907 (900, 901–2 in the Greek): there are textual problems in these lines; I have gone with what seems a plausible understanding of the general sense.
x. 930–31 (924 in the Greek): I have omitted the word nosos (sickness), identified by Griffith as suspect, but have not supplied an alternative.
xi. 975 (970 in the Greek): Griffith, with other editors, assumes a lacuna of at least one line before this line, chiefly because it doesn’t seem to make sense as a response to what Hermes has just said.
